let me say that again

literal nazis attacked a group of people

on their way back from a “take back the night” rally

i want every politician in this country to be constantly reminded of this

actually every single human being. let’s shout it from the rooftops

and when POC’s say they feel threatened when ACTUAL nazis attend their political events the police (among others) tell them they’re exaggerating.

ARE YOU INTO SWEDISH ROCK? check this out, Dennis Lyxzén’s new band INVSN hosted a big release party for their new album late last year. They got several guests on stage, such as Nicole Sabouné, Markus Krunegård, Kajsa Grytt and Mattias Alkberg.

Easiest way to describe it? Joy Division, in Swedish, with a healthy dose of northern punk.

I’m definitely more conscious of social issues in media I consume now. And while Alastair Reynolds still has very gendered writing (why does this guy need to have “womanly” hands, what is with you and captured Conjoiner women anywho) he does a great job of having a nicely 1:1 ratio of dudes to ladies in his books. And it’s not just like they’re all one type either, you’ve got scientists and spaceship pilots and artists and daughters and mothers and manipulative barely-human entities and weapons experts and assassins and journalists and wives and what-have-you and that’s totally awesome.

The only books of his I can think of without a lady protag that gets at least half of the attention is Chasm City and like… the Diamond Dogs short story and the other short story in Diamond Dogs/Turquoise Days is all about some lady scientist and her relationship with her dead sister soooo.

(haven’t read Galactic North, still on The Prefect now)

Basically I just really appreciate the fact that he’s down with writing like… the head technician in charge of the fancy search-engine turbine system in the elite democracy police force to totally be a lady.

And the person in charge of said democracy police force to be a lady.

And the person who replaced the previous head lady (because the mysterious alien artifact attached to her spine is doing funny things) to also be a lady.

Basically I just really appreciate the fact that there is no single token female character in his books.

yeah and his newest book On the Steel Breeze even has an important non-binary person who is an awesome scientist and morally grey (ok his characters generally are epically morally grey) and everyone just uses gender-neutral pronouns for them

Whoooo! Is that one of the books in Blue Remembered Earth? I have to read said series because spacefaring civilization Africa like WHOA. The more of his stuff I read the fonder I get of him, and I even try my darndest to understand the hard science jargon.

I do know he starts getting away from the whole gender binary thing in House of Suns, since all of the shatterlings of the Gentian line are technically clones of one lady, and have her memories and identify as her. But since half of the plot is narrated by Campion, who is male, it’s cool that he refers to his childhood as being female. Of course I headcanoned all of the shatterlings as being different races and body types too, because there’s no reason you can’t make them that way. Plus it would be the best way to have all sort of facets all over the galaxy and get the most out of the whole experience/knowledge hoarding thing. Their only distinctive features are their eyes and cheekbones anyway.

Yeah the non-binary person is called Travertine and is in the book after Blue Remembered Earth in the Poseidon’s Children trilogy. When I saw the first gender-neutral pronoun I thought it was a printing error, but then it went on consistently throughout the book, yay! The pronouns are ve, ver, vis, verself.

Ugh I just googled Travertine and there are so many people complaining about never finding out about vis gender or about it never being explained. That’s the whole point. And there are even people who still believe it’s a typo even though it’s consistent for just one character and the whole book. *headdesk*

But yeah, non-Euro/US-centric science fiction, yay!

It was some time ago that I read House of Suns, but didn’t the shatterlings also switch genders throughout their lifes? I thought that was rather awesome back then.

I’m really not sure, because it’s even longer since I read Chasm City, but didn’t Zebra say that she used to be male and changed that along with her heavy mody modifications?

it seems like i really need to start reading some reynolds again
